This is a list of the major rapids in sections 2 and 3 of the Lochsa River. The numbers correspond to the free Forest Service map which I will have copies of for you when I see you. Not all highway markers can be seen from the river but I tried to list the ones which can be seen. The take-out is listed first which means you should read this list from bottom to top as you go down the river. I suggest you print this out and take your own notes as we drive toward the put-in. Highway Marker 97 - Three Rivers Resort 61 Hellgate (I flipped here once, hit the hole on-purpose) --- Take Out at Knife Edge 58 Coolwater Creek 57 Fire Creek Highway Marker 111 56 Surprise Beginning of section 4 55 Split Creek (just before the pack bridge) 54 Termination (flips: Sparwasser, Slattery, Herring) Highway Marker 113 53 Old Man 52 Pipeline (usually lots of kayakers here) 51 Unnamed (Picking Up the Pieces) 50 Lochsa Falls (usually a crowd along the bank) At very high water (9 ft) run river center (left of tongue) At high water (7 ft) there is a sneak route on the far left. At low water (2 ft) avoid the hole by hugging the right bank. Usually you just punch it right down the middle. Push forward! 49 Prelude 48 Horsetail Falls 47 Jones's Waves Highway Marker 115 46 Shoestring Falls 45 Cliffside 44 Grim Reaper Highway Marker 116 43 Bloody Mary 42 House Wave Highway Marker 117 41 Morning Glory Big sweeping left turn, run left. I'm not always sure where I am when we get here so I use this big bend in the river to calibrate myself. This is when the fun begins! Highway Marker 118 40 Otter Slide 39 Unnamed (Eel Creek) Highway Marker 119 38 Killer Fang (sounds worse than it is) 37 Unnamed (Mile 119) 36 Sandy Beach 35 Fish Creek Rapid --- Lunch Stop at Fish Creek Access Point, beginning of section 3 34 Boulder Creek 33 Wilderness Gateway Bridge (don't hit the bridge, I've seen it happen) Highway Marker 123 32 Unnamed 31 Ten Pin Alley This is one of the most technical rapids on the river and it is hard to scout from the road. It can always be run on the right. As you approach the rapid, stay center but be prepared to move right. Once you pass the first few waves on the right, row hard to the right. Generally you want to be very close to the right bank. There is a huge rock on the right and you want to go to the right of it! This is the one rapid where you'll want to row backwards and go slow. You need to be on your best game here. At medium and high water there are other (numerous) routes through this rapid. People sometimes go center and they make it just fine but they have to do a lot of maneuvering. This rapid is full of boulders making it hard to scout any route. I always run right as described above. 30 No-See-Um 29 Mile 125 Rapid (can be harder than it looks) Easy to find due to large culverts where highway washed out a few years ago. 28 Unnamed (Pass Creek) Highway Marker 126 27 Log Jam (huge waves in sweeping left turn) These may be the largest waves on the river depending on the flow. They look intimidating but we always just go right down the middle. Just keep your boat straight! If you go for a swim, swim to the left to avoid the log jam down below on the right. Again, this is the one place where you need to swim LEFT. 26 Class V Highway Marker 128 25 County Corner (highway station) 24 Mile 129 --- Put-in at Nine Mile 23 Unnamed 22 Triple Hole This is a tough rapid. There are (obviously) three holes and it's tough to miss 'em all. Lots of maneuvering around rocks. Hard to scout and cannot be seen from the road. 21 Castle Creek This is the longest rapid on the river, over 1/2 mile. It is also quite dangerous at high water because of numerous large holes and the consequences of a swim here are bad. This is one reason I like to put in at Nine Mile. On the other hand, this rapid is relatively easy at low water. 20 Holly Creek 19 Onno's Hole (Lone Pine, large pine tree on river right) Guaranteed flip if you hit the hole but it's easy to run left of if you're paying attention. 18 Mile 132 Rapid (No Sweat) 17 Mile Long 16 Mile 133 Rapid 15 Stanley Creek 14 Keep Moving 13 Fake Onno's Hole (a huge hole in its own right) Guaranteed flip if you hit the hole but it's easy to run left of if you're paying attention. 12 Unnamed 11 Lower Eagle Mountain Eagle Mountain Put-in Eagle Mountain Pack Bridge 10 Eagle Mountain 9 Lost Creek (Rocky Corner) 8 Eye Opener 7 Unnamed 6 Unnamed White Pine Put-in, beginning of section 2 $Revision: 1.1 $
